Smithfield Recycles
Total Participation Recycling Program
Since 2007, the Town of Smithfield no longer collects trash from residents who do not recycle. There will be no exceptions to this program.
Replacement recycling carts are available at the Department of Public Works at 3 Spragueville Rd. (next to the Ice Rink/Animal Shelter, off Rte. 116/Pleasant View Ave.) The Department of Public Works will be responsible for repairs including, but not limited to wheels, axles, lids, hinge pins, and replacement of carts damaged by Town plows or Town vehicles.
For more information, visit the Total Participation Recycling Program page or call the Recycling Coordinator at 233-1034, ext 205.
Bulky Items and Metal/ Appliance Items Pick-Up Request
Bulk (trash) items and metal/appliance items are collected, by appointment, on a first come, first served basis, according to the schedule on the trash and recycling calendar.
To schedule a pick up please call our hauling company, Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545. Please note, construction debris is not accepted through the Town’s Trash and Recycling program and some exceptions apply.
Yard Waste Collection
The Town of Smithfield will begin Lawn and Yard Waste pickup on the first full week of April. Yard waste is collected on residents’ regular trash day on a route separate from trash and recycling.
Yard waste must be set at the curb in brown paper bags (available at local retailers) or barrels clearly labeled YARD WASTE. Yard waste in plastic garbage bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected. A maximum of 12 barrels and/or bags of yard waste is accepted per household.
Yard waste will be collected every week April through May; every other week starting June through October, and every week through November. Please see the recycling calendar for exact dates.
Composting is a good way to reduce your curbside yard waste collection requirements. Compost bins are available to residents for $45 each at the Smithfield Public Works Garage located at 3 Spragueville Road (behind Dave’s Towing Service).
Please contact the Smithfield Recycling Coordinator at 233-1034, ext 205 or send an email to recycle@smithfieldri.com with questions.
Plastic Grocery Bags
Single use plastic grocery bags and (stretchy) film can be brought back to your local grocery store or pharmacy; please do not put them in recycling bins or use them to dispose of recyclables in the recycling bins.
There should be no plastic bags or film placed in curbside recycling carts.
Cardboard
Got cardboard? There is a cardboard recycling container at Smithfield DPW, 3 Spragueville Rd. Smithfield residents can bring flattened cardboard up to 5 feet in length for recycling. Drop-off is available during DPW hours of operation are M-F 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
