SMITHFIELD TRASH AND RECYCLING COLLECTION
Fully Automated Collection has been in place since 2013

We wanted to give a reminder of the procedures for Automated Trash/Recycling Collection:

  • Trash/Recycling must be in the Town provided cart.
  • Recycling must be out in order for trash to be collected (No bin, no barrel policy)
  • Place carts 3 feet apart from each other
  • DO NOT place carts near any obstacles such as trees, mail boxes, telephone poles or parked cars- there must be a 4-foot distance between the carts and any obstructions.
  • Arrows on cart lid must face the street.
  • Cart lids must be closed and no material on top of the lid or spilling out of cart.
  • You are allowed to write your address on the lid label.  DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME—Trash and Recycling Carts are property of the Town.
  • Do not put lawn and yard waste in either of the new carts.  The current lawn and yard waste schedule will remain in effect. Lawn and yard waste stickers are available at the DPW and Town Hall to label your old trash cans if you chose to re-purpose them for use as lawn and yard waste barrels.
  • Only recyclable items are to be deposited into carts with the yellow lid.
  • DO NOT put old green or blue recycle bins in your new cart.  Those bins can be dropped off at the DPW, 3 Spragueville Rd from 7:30 – 3:00 pm
  • Bulky Items will be collected once per month by appointment only by calling 1-800-927-4545.
  • Metal and Appliance, bulk sized items will be collected once per month by appointment only by calling 1-800-972-4545.

Winter Storm Automated Collection Tips:

  • When snow is predicted to fall during the overnight hours please wait until early morning to put out your trash and recycling carts so that plow trucks can efficiently clean snow during the overnight hours.
  • Please have your carts out by 6:00 am and be sure to properly space them 3 feet apart and 4 feet from other obstacles such as snowbanks, cars, poles and mailboxes.
  • Please bring empty carts in as soon as possible to allow plow trucks to complete access to roadways.
  • Updates and changes will be posted on this page and a message will be left on the Recycling Coordinator’s voicemail 233-1034 ext. 105.

 Automated Collection Tips:

  • All trash and recyclables must be in Town provided carts.
  • Place one cart on each side of the driveway or 3 feet apart.
  • Place carts no more than 3 feet from the curb or road edge.
  • Trash and Recycling carts are the property of the Town, and no markings are permitted on the cart other than in the white address label on top.
  • Arrows on cart lid face the street.
  • Cart lids must be closed with no material sticking out, and no material may be placed on top of the cart lid.
  • Changes or delays in your trash/recycling pick-up are posted on this webpage and a message will also be left on the Recycling Coordinator’s voicemail 233-1034 ext. 105.
