Procedures for Turning in Firearms To the Smithfield Police Department (Pursuant to a Court Order)

• Never walk directly into police headquarters carrying a firearm;

• Prior to turning in a firearm(s) at the Smithfield Police Department, first contact the dispatcher at (401) 231-2500 and advise them of the reason for your visit;

• Make sure you have a copy of the protective order in your possession when turning firearms in to the state police, local police or a gun dealer (RIGL 8-8.1);

• Each firearm must be rendered safe, preferably with a trigger lock or cable lock, and placed separately into a clear plastic bag, unless packaged in a gun case and delivered in a non-see-through container such as a pocket book, gym bag, backpack or suit case;

• The firearm(s) must be transported in the trunk of a car separate from any ammunition;

• If turning in magazines in addition to a firearm(s), the magazines must be empty and placed into a clear plastic bag and delivered in a non-see-through container;

• Ammunition will not be accepted, unless stipulated in the court order;

• Rifles and shotguns must be rendered safe, preferably with a trigger lock or cable lock, have the safety engaged, be empty of all ammunition, and have the bolt locked to the rear. The rifle(s) and shotgun(s) may be contained in a gun case if available;

• The Smithfield Police Department will issue a signed receipt for all firearms surrendered pursuant to a court order.

Note: The Rhode Island State Police will only accept surrendered firearms at State Police Headquarters located at 311 Danielson Pike North Scituate, R.I. 02857. If surrendering firearms to the State Police or other local police departments, please be sure to follow each agency’s procedures.
