There will be no trash, recycling or yard waste collection on Monday, November 11th due to Veteran’s Day holiday. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
Any fire station close to you will be happy to check your blood pressure at no charge. Remember to check your blood pressure often if you have high blood pressure, family history, or other high risk factors.

What do I do if my fire extinguisher needs to be recharged?
The best thing to do in this case is to buy a new extinguisher. It can cost just as much to have it refilled as it is to get a new one.
When an emergency vehicle is approaching that is displaying emergency lights and sirens, what should I do?
By Rhode Island law, you are required to pull to the right and stop. This allows Fire Apparatus adequate and clear lanes to safely and quickly continue its response.
Why do so many fire apparatus respond to incidents?
When there is a fire alarm going off or there is a report of a building on fire we must send 2 Engine Companies, 1 Ladder Truck, 1 ALS Rescue, and 1 Fire Chief due to the fact there are so many tasks needed to be completed in the event of an actual fire. It is always better to have more help than not enough.
Why does the fire truck go to medical calls?
In many cases, an Engine will be closer to a scene of a sick or injured person than one of our ALS Rescues. Since all fire fighters are required to be EMT certified, this allows us to place trained medical people on a scene more quickly. The fire crews can evaluate a patient’s needs and condition, and forward any information to the responding rescue while still en route. In addition, it may require more than two fire fighters to transport the patient to the truck, perform life-saving procedures, carry equipment, etc.
Will the Fire Department show me where to put the smoke detectors and CO detectors in my home?
Yes. We will tell you how many detectors you need and the recommended locations.
What is allowed to be burned in my yard?
Open burning is not allowed in the Town of Smithfield. View §198-109 Open fires in the Town Code.
Are tours of a fire station possible?
Absolutely. Individuals and/or families may tour our facilities at any time between 9:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M. Groups should make arrangements by calling 949-1330 or email our Fire Prevention Division for more info.
